Whenever I see water running out of the tap unnecessarily, I feel really sad. It shakes me that why people really don't care about such an important resource. Here I'll be sharing some survey reports about water scarcity and ways to become a responsible citizen of the world by helping save water.
Water covers 70% of the surface of Earth. It is found in Oceans, seas, lakes etc. Only 3% of the total water is fresh and fit for human consumption. Rest 97% is found in Oceans and seas which is saline and not fit for drinking. From the 3% of fresh water 2% is found as frozen in ice caps and glaciers. This tells us that only 1% of water is what we use regularly. This is what you must be knowing by reading in textbooks or newspapers but have we ever wondered what would happen if the water today available will not be fit to be consumed in coming years.
A need to worry!
Water stress in India
Even after knowing so much about the scarcity of water, most of us would not try to take essential steps to protect it. According to surveys 20% of the world's population lacks access to safe drinking water. Irrigational practises alone account for 70% of water usage in the world. 700 million people all over the world could be displaced by the extreme water scarcity by 2030.
- A report highlights that India is using the largest amount of ground water i.e 24% of the world's total which is more than that of China and US combined.
- The report added" In 2014-15 India exported 37.2 lakh tonnes of basmati. To export rice the country used around 10 TRILLION litres of water!
- 2.1 billion people live without safe water at home.

Creating awareness
Water protection can be started at individual level. If one has a mindset made to save water he/she would have to start with his/her family, friends and neighbours. We would have to make people aware of this crisis and it's consequences.
What should we do!
- If you see someone wasting water, immediately stop them and politely explain them it's importance.
- People often do not care if we explain them but telling them the global water scarcity scenario could help.
- At last nothing is possible if you quit in between or do not take the responsibility to protect our very precious resource.
Every drop counts!
